Metro İstanbul Tram Drivers at European Tram Drivers Championship!
This year’s 8th European Tram Drivers Championship was organised with the participation of 25 cities from 21 countries and Metro İstanbul took the 11th place in the championship. Championship was organised for the first time in 2012 within the context of 140th year events of trams of Dresden, Germany. The championship brings Europe’s tram operators together and aims to establish bonds and relations in between the various tram operators in Europe. The championship also seeks to improve the cultural connections in between the participants as well. This year’s events took place in Brussels, Belgium where the tram service was celebrating its 150th year. Metro Istanbul represented Turkey in the championship where 25 cities of 21 countries participated in the championship.
Male and female contenders competed in different groups where the drivers demonstrated their abilities with the Nostalgic Tram and Modern Tram. In Nostalgic Tram, drivers competed in driving and closest stop to the designated target. In Modern Tram, drivers competed in gauge control in curve area, aligning passenger doors very close to the stop point, stopping with emergency braking and bowling with the tram. Ranks were determined by overall scoring and Brussels won the 1st place, Moscow from Russia took the 2nd place and Oradea from Romania got the 3rd place, Metro Istanbul team which was represented by Şehnaz Güneş and Özcan Öztekin got the 11th place in the championship. Next year, 9th of the organisation will be held at Oradea City of Romania.
