Good News of Five New Funicular Lines for Istanbul
Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Ekrem Imamoglu resolved the financial problems of F4 Rumeli Hisarustu-Asiyan Funicular Line and restarted the works on the relevant project whose construction was halted in the past management period. Emphasising that they are producing projects to bring the people of Istanbul together with the sea, Mayor Imamoglu gave the good news that they will start five new lines in the next 1.5 years. Construction of which F4 Rumeli Hisarustu-Asiyan Funicular Line started on June 7th, 2017 by the previous administration, but the project was halted after a while. Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) solved the financial problems of the relevant project and restarted the construction works. An event is organised for the re-production of the line with the participation of Mayor of IMM Ekrem Imamoglu. Consulate General of Czech Republic for Istanbul, Jiri Cistecky, and Mayor of Sariyer Mayor Sukru Genc, IMM senior management and Metro Istanbul General Manager Ozgur Soy accompanied Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu in the event.
“We aim to open in October 2021”
Mayor Imamoglu, who got technical information about the line from Head of IMM Rail Systems Department Pelin Alpkokin, emphasised that they are in one of the most beautiful points of the Bosporus and gave the following information:
“When we consider the manufacturing and design process of this 800-meter-long line, which is especially necessary for vehicle manufacturing, about 11 - 12 months, we set ourselves October 2021as our target. We will commission this line. I hope that this line will have the capacity to carry 6 thousand passengers per hour in two directions.
“We will get Mecidiyekoy-Mahmutbey Line commissioned by September”
Emphasising that Istanbul needs metro for the future, Mayor Imamoglu said that they want to bring an integrated public transportation method to Istanbulites. Expressing that they aim to put into use the 5-rail systems in the next 1.5 years, Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu stated that they have speeded up the works by fixing financing and technical problems in the lines that are under construction.
Drawing attention to the importance of M7 Kabatas-Besiktas-Mecidiyekoy-Mahmutbey Metro Line and T5 Eminonu-Eyupsultan-Alibeykoy Tram Line, Mayor Imamoglu said, “Mecidiyekoy- Mahmutbey Line can be considered as the first part of this section. We were going to commission it on May 19th, but it is delayed because of the pandemic and the fact that the team that came from abroad and commissioned the electromechanical part of this project had returned to their own country. We want to get Mecidiyekoy-Mahmutbey Line commissioned by September, when the population of Istanbul will be denser. This line will also be the line that will ease the transportation axis concentrated on E-5 highway. ”
The target for Eminonu-Alibeykoy Line is end of the year…
Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu reminded that they had to demolish a 1.5-kilometer section whose construction was completed because of the ground analyses they carried out on T5 Eminonu-Eyupsultan-Alibeykoy Tram Line and said “The Golden Horn is a sensitive place. The process was started before the ground of the Golden Horn was analysed well. While a piled system should be preferred, it was passed with a surface treatment. Crashes had begun there without any load or any commissioning. We acted fast on this line; we broke, piled, and re-installed the rail. We will get Unkapani-Alibeykoy section of Eminonu-Alibeykoy line commissioned by the end of this year. There, we made both financial planning and technical planning in this direction. This will take over an important population and traffic density as a burden. These two lines also intersect with other dense lines. This will also strengthen the integration". Expressing that tunnel excavations are over at M9 Atakoy-Basin Ekspres-Ikitelli Metro, Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu stated that they plan to commission Bahariye-Ikitelli section of the line in 2021. Emphasising that there are serious metro investments on the Anatolian side, Mayor Imamoglu said that they care about M8 Bostanci-Dudullu Line, which connects the subways on the east-west axis, and they aim to commission this 14.3-kilometer line at the end of 2021.
“We need to bring people to the sea”
Drawing attention to the importance of the integration of metro and funicular lines with sea lines, Mayor Imamoglu said that they want to bring rail systems to the sea in a healthy way: “We question the issue like this: ‘Why do people not use the sea? Use it! It is necessary to bring people to the sea and ask them to use the sea. In this sense, we have a work between Anadolu Hisari and Kucuksu, and here we will connect Kucuksu-Kandilli piers and Asiyan from here. It will be a very precious line especially. We will ensure that this line, which connects upward from Asiyan, merges with other points from the Bosporus. Our studies continue at the funicular point. Project studies continue on five different funicular lines such as Tophane-Sishane, Avcilar E5-Avcilar IDO, Kavacik-Cubuklu, ITU-Istinye, and Altunizade-Cengelkoy. ”
“The length of the rail systems will reach to 300 kilometres”
Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu stated that the length of the rail systems in Istanbul is 233 kilometres, including the lines of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, and this figure will increase up to 260 kilometres with the two lines they will commission this year. Mayor Imamoglu informed that metro length will reach to 300 kilometres with Gayrettepe-Istanbul Airport Line and said, "I hope to get more comfortable in traffic. All organisations and institutions of Turkey, Ministry of Transport, our government and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality should strengthen the system by making good, efficient and timely investments in our cities by using Turkey’s money, money of the Turkish nation”.
“All investments in Istanbul belong to the people of Istanbul”
Underlining that the investments they make and will make belong to 16 million people of Istanbul, not to a person or a political party. Mayor Imamoglu said that they would continue to serve the people of Istanbul with the most accurate projects by using the money of the people in the best possible way.
Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Ekrem Imamoglu thanked every person, institution and organisation that contributed to F4 Rumeli Hisarustu-Asiyan project and completed his speech with the following:
“We know the blessings and opportunities of the city well”
“I wish all my colleagues and all labourers to finish this project without any trouble or problem. I hope to present this line to the service of the people of Istanbul next year proudly. The analysis of the process with the sensitive and meticulous comments of our colleagues at IMM adds great power and strength to me. Nobody should worry about how we manage the process. Nobody should try to put anxiety on the agenda of Istanbul like failing to finish a project we started. We know the blessings of this city and the opportunities of this city. There is only one difference. We are doing this work sworn to use the blessings and opportunities of this city only and only on behalf of the people of Istanbul. For this reason, we will use these resources and end the process without making anybody victimised. I wish you all the convenience in your work. May Allah not shame any of us! May Allah consummate! These are good prayers. We plan to include our nation in this process in the time we targeted. May it be used in good manners”. When the line is built between Rumeli Hisarustu region and Asiyan Park located on the Bosporus coast is completed, it will be integrated with M6 Levent-Bogazici University/ Hisarustu line at Rumeli Hisarustu station.
