We Are Balancing Our Carbon Footprint Reference Values

Metro Istanbul’s Carbon Neutralising Project Balancing Carbon Footprint Reference Values Greenhouse gas release is one of the outcomes of businesses that effect the environment. These released greenhouse gases can be calculated for the provided products, services and processes and these reference values represent “carbon footprint” of relevant activity.

Railway systems are the most environmental friendly transport method after bicycles. Metro Istanbul is one of the flagships of railway systems in Turkey and contributes a lot to the environment with a range of activities to balance the carbon footprint reference value of its 4877 services every day. Within this framework Metro Istanbul initiated a social responsibility project to neutralise carbon footprint in M2 and M6 Lines in 5th of June on World Environment Day in collaboration with Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality affiliate ISTAC which has world’s biggest carbon credit with 5, 5 million tonnes equivalent carbon reduction.

Metro İstanbul Circumnavigates the World Every Day
Metro Istanbul provides convenient, comfortable and punctual transportation to its passengers with 4877 services in 12 Lines and the distance our cars travel sums up to 232 thousand km, meaning circumnavigation of the world 5 times every day. Metro Istanbul carried 578 Million passengers in 2016 which is more than 7 times of the population of Turkey. M2 Line carries 416 thousand passengers daily and 3, 7 million passengers weekly whilst M6 Line carries 16 thousand passengers daily and 112 thousand passengers weekly which is meaning 750 tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent (ton CO2eq) greenhouse gas release which will be neutralised as a part of the relevant social responsibility project. 

Istanbul’s Most Environmental Friendly Transport Choice: Railway systems
Metro Istanbul provides comfortable, fast, safe and most environmental friendly services to more than 2 million passengers every day. As a result of a Customer Satisfaction Survey we see that %64 of people prefer to travel with metro even though they have their own cars.   

Metro Istanbul provides 4877 services in 12 different lines with 692 vehicles in between 06.00 AM and 00.00 PM every day. Metro Istanbul makes a great contribution to the environment by pulling out 228 thousand cars from traffic which is meaning lesser oil consumption of 150.414 litres and preventing 290 tonnes of greenhouse emission every day. 

People prefer metro because it renders convenient, fast, time efficient, punctual and economic form of transportation. Being the most environmental friendly form of transport is not enough for Metro Istanbul that is why it is going to neutralise M2 and M6 Lines’ carbon footprint values for a day in 5th of June on World Environment Day.
