66 New Drivers Got Their Licences
Licences were given to 66 train drivers who completed 24th Term Train Driver Training Programme which is organised by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Affiliate Metro Istanbul.
Metro Istanbul is the biggest urban rail system operator of Turkey and harbours 690 train drivers that go through Train Driving Train Programme which is carried out successfully by Metro Istanbul for years. Licences were given to 66 train drivers who have recently graduated from 24th Term Train Driver Training Programme after a ceremony that took place in Bakirkoy Municipality Cem Karaca Cultural Centre with the participation of Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Ekrem Imamoglu. Mayor Imamoglu was accompanied by People’s Republican Party Elazig Province MP Gursel Erol, Mayor of Bakirkoy Municipality Bulent Kerimoglu, IYI Party Istanbul Province Chairman Bugra Kavuncu, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Advisors Murat Ongun and Ertan Yildiz. Opening speech was delivered by Ali Firat who is Deputy General Manager for Metro Istanbul Operations and Deputy General Manager. A short film about the training programme of the train drivers and works of Metro Istanbul was presented as well.
Mayor Imamoglu Thanked Everyone for Their Contributions
Mayor Imamoglu delivered a speech after the film and emphasised that Metro and Metro Lines are their priority in transportation and added that they are going to speed up their Works in this matter. Mayor Imamoglu indicated that “If you don’t use underground efficiently you do not stand a chance to deal with transportation. We would like to thank to Esteemed Nurettin Sozen who laid the foundation of metro in Istanbul and those who contributed to this cause. We are going to be the driving force of this procedure and we are going to make this matter our priority”. Mayor Imamoglu also stated that there is not an explicit definition of Metro Drivers “We have to carry out a work to come up with a name for Metro Drivers. When I got to the metro I asked the drivers “How should we call you?” You know there is a captain for a ship and we use captain for bus drivers as well but I believe we could not find such a symbolic name for Metro Drivers. I hope we will find a name. I had “Captain” in my mind”.
“This City is Alive for 24 Hours”
Mayor Imamoglu indicated that Istanbul is a city that is alive for 24 hours and gave a piece of good news saying that “This city is alive for 24 hours and we know for sure that there are people who work during the night. We also know that this city is very vibrant during the night as well and every part of the city is different from each other. Providing 24 hours transportation services in Istanbul has been an argument for some time and unfortunately has not ever been in practice. I would like to share a good news about this matter in advance that we are going to start this practice especially in metro lines and busy bus routes as of 30th August midnight”.
“Customer Satisfaction is %85”
Deputy General Manager of Metro Istanbul Ali Firat delivered a speech reminding that Metro Istanbul is in leading position in its field in Turkey and indicated that Metro Istanbul finds itself a place every year in the first 250 amongst the biggest 500 companies. Metro Istanbul also has a reputable place amidst World Metros and pointed out that effectuation rate of trips in time is %99, 25. Ali Firat also gave information about the following:
“We recorded that unwanted incidents that took place in our operations last month are 2, 4 out of 1 million passengers which is two times better than the average figures of various World Metros. Although we got a pleasing 97, 4 value in customer satisfaction in secret passenger survey of last month we believe that your working discipline is going to help us improve this key indicator”. Ali Firat continued his speech by calling out to the train drivers saying that “Our friends! You are the bridge in between Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and Metro Istanbul with its passengers. You represent our company, our municipality and our mayor when you are delivering your job. For this reason, you are going to have an important and determining role in improving customer satisfaction which was %85 in the last quarter”.
“Marriage Proposal” Surprise in the Ceremony
Mayor Imamoglu celebrated 30th August Victory Day of the participants and licence handing over ceremony was commenced. Mayor Imamoglu represented the licences of the drivers starting with 4 female drivers and then 62 male drivers and then family photo was taken. During the photo shooting an interesting event took place. A new train driver named Abdulaziz Yilmazer asked a permission of the Mayor and took the microphone and said “This job was my second dream and I would like my first dream to come true with your permission” the driver proposed to his girlfriend Ipek Gecir who was amongst the participants and asked “Will you marry me?” and then invited her to the stage. Ipek Gecir came to the stage with astonishment and Yilmazer remade the proposal before Mayor Imamoglu and his friends on his knees. Ipek Gecir took the ring given by Yilmazer and accepted the proposal with the applauses of the crowd. Mayor Imamoglu congratulated the couple and said “Let us perform the marriage ceremony then adding hurry up let us solemnise”.
We carry more than 2 million passengers per day
Candidates got through intensive training in the fields of occupational security, emergency procedures, health, driving techniques, trains, traffic operation, occupational training and applied driving techniques theoretically and practically during the process. Along with the theoretical training drivers took applied driving training from the experts in night with carriages without passengers. Candidates also took written and practical exams after Train Driver Training Programme which lasts 4 months.
Metro Istanbul employs 2711 employees as of 2019 and carries over 2 million passengers per day with its 12 lines, 158 stations, 844 vehicles and 154, 25 km long network.
